The need in El Salvador

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the number one birth defect afflicting children

around the world today. Accordingto the World Heart Foundation over 5.5 million children are born every year with a congenital heart defect (1 out of every 100 births) and 94% of these children are born in countries that cannot provide them treatment.

In El Salvador approximately 1,200 children are born every year with congenital heart disease, of these 500 to 600 children may need corrective surgery. Of all the newborns, some that have less severe injuries may live several years; however, many children require surgery to be performed early on in life.  If the surgery is not performed promptly, heart damage can occur, along with kidney, brain and/ or lung damage.  A child with congenital heart disease may be admitted to the Bloom Hospital 3-5 times a year.  Many of them will require intensive care for their ailment, some may die when they defect is not corrected.
